Buy More Stuff
A Dystopian Reflection on Consumerism
Conceived from a disconcerting exploration into the pervasive influence of television and advertising on children, BUY MORE STUFF serves as an immersive installation designed to evoke a sense of unease. Housed in a small, pitch-black room, this thought-provoking experience unfolds with a motorised toy doll and a glitched video montage of diverse advert clips displayed on a screen suspended inches away from the cot the doll is laying in. The viewer’s feelings of unease are further heightened by an eerie audio track featuring distorted jingles remixed with the sounds of industrial machinery.
The Concept: Unmasking the Impact of Advertising on Youth
BUY MORE STUFF emerged from a critical examination of the profound impact of TV exposure and early exposure to advertising on young minds. The installation peels back the layers, revealing the disconcerting reality of how consumerism infiltrates from the earliest stages of life. By plunging the viewer into complete darkness and confronting them with a dissonant blend of visuals and sounds, the experience intends to spark contemplation on the profound implications of our consumer-driven society.
The Components: Dolls, Servos, and Unnerving Audio
At the heart of BUY MORE STUFF lies a motorised baby doll, serving as both a symbolic representation and an unsettling focal point. The glitched video compilation on the screen showcases various advertisements, their distorted nature reflecting the often manipulative and deceptive nature of commercial messages. The accompanying audio track, a disconcerting blend of jingles and machine noises, heightens the uneasy atmosphere.
